Seminar on Gender Perspective in the Security Sector – Session 2

 The Ministry of Defense and the UN WOMEN Office in Serbia conducted the second three-day educational session entitled "Gender Perspective in the Security Sector ", from December 15 - 17 in Zlatibor.

The aim of the session was to bring the topic of gender equality closer to as many members of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces, primarily through a review of the general legal framework consisting of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and accompanying resolutions, as well as national laws, strategies and action plans. The focus of the work was on understanding the institutional and normative framework that ensures increased representation, involvement and decision-making of women in all processes related to peacekeeping and security and development of prevention mechanisms to increase women's security in peace, conflict and post-conflict recovery, and emergencies.

The participants in both sessions were introduced to the causes and forms of discrimination against women, instruments and mechanisms for its prevention, as well as basic concepts related to gender-based violence and protection against it.

The Ministry of Defense implements the policy of equal opportunities and gender equality as one of the strategic goals, striving for better results, standards and empowerement of women entering the system.

The leadership actions of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces in drafting and implementing the National Action Plan (NAP) for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 - "Women, Peace and Security" in the Republic of Serbia enabled the development of mechanisms for implementing gender policies and identifying and preventing gender discrimination.
